(meaning "gentle way") is a modern martial art,
combat and Olympic sport created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano.
Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the
objective is to either throw or take down an opponent to the ground,
immobilize or otherwise subdue an opponent with a pin, or force
an opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke. Strikes and
thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defenses are a part
of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms (kata) and are not allowed
in judo competition or free practice (randori).
Judo is practiced by more than 100 million people in more than 200
countries worldwide. There are many reasons why judo is such a popular
sport and activity. Judo has a wide range of appeal as a sport,
an art, a discipline, a recreational pastime, a social activity,
a fitness program, a means of self-defense, and a way of life.
The Shutokai Judo Club is a club for all ages. Our club meets twice
a week: Tuesdays at 8:00pm for our combined Juvenile/Adult class
and Thursdays at 6:15pm for our Kids class and 7:30pm for our combined
Juvenile/Adult class. The club meets at the Boys and Girls Club
at 499 Canterbury Dr., Fredericton, NB in Skyline Acres.

Shutokai Judo Club has a Sensei,
Clive Cannon, with a 4th degree black belt who has been instructing
for over 25 years.
Clive and his
assistances all volunteer their time to teach you and your children
Judo at an affordable rate.
We offer a free
two (2) week trial period and we accept new members at any time
throughout the year.
Here are a few
testimonials from some participants and parents:
was a little apprehensive about joining the club due to my age ...
not many people start learning a new Martial Art at 36yrs of age
... I quickly learned that ALL egos are left at the door and every
single student is treated with respect and courtesy.
a parent, you want to make sure that when you put your child in
an activity that you get what you pay for. The Shutokai Judo Club
certainly provides that and so much more. Our boys get three hours
of professional training in a positive learning atmosphere with
an emphasis on fun for a ridiculously low rate (I hope that doesn't
mean they'll increase it!)."
is regulated in New Brunswick by Judo NB, and in Canada by Judo Canada.
Shutokai Judo Club is an active and paying member of both these organizations.
Clive Cannon, not only taught us the basic skills, he taught us
the history and philosophy of judo and its founder, Jigoro Kano.
I fell in love with judo!"
